shift is wild

The shift itself

When your child is sick and you are on the schedule

Your kid is sick. The schedule is not emotional. Call out cleanly and keep receipts.

Nick reacting to this topic

Your kid is sick. You are on the schedule. The unit still has to cover the shift.

Keep it short. Use the official call-out route. Save proof that you followed the process. This is work documentation, not a patient-care note.

The short version

  • Use the required call-out method: staffing office, call line, portal, charge nurse, or manager, depending on policy.
  • Say which shift you will miss and why: you need to care for your sick child.
  • Do not send a symptom-by-symptom story in a group text.
  • Keep your own call-out log: date, time, number called, person spoken to, and what they said.
  • Save clean proof: call log, portal confirmation, email, leave request, pediatric note, school or childcare exclusion note. Do not save anything with patient identifiers from the unit.

What goes wrong

The usual mistake is simple: too much explaining, not enough documenting.

You text three coworkers. You describe every symptom. You feel bad. You assume someone will tell staffing.

Then later, the attendance record may only show that you did not report for the shift. All those extra details do not help much. They can also muddy the water if the child’s symptoms change, because kids do that.

Keep it plain. Notify the right place. Say you cannot work the specific shift because you need to care for your sick child. Ask how the absence will be coded. Save proof.

It is not hypothetical

No case in our set speaks to this directly.

What the guidance says

  • Keep work-related entries factual, clear, and specific enough that someone else can understand what happened later. (NIH PMC, NSO)
  • Write down key communications: who was involved and what instructions or responses you got. (NSO, PMC)
  • When you submit a school, childcare, or medical note, follow that office’s rules and keep a copy of what you sent. (Adobe, Blueberry Pediatrics)

What this one rests on

No published decision turned up for this question — we looked, and the searches are in the record. So this article stands on published guidance and on how the question is asked on the floor, not on a court opinion. That is a weaker footing than the rest of the guide, and you should know it before you rely on it. The decisions behind the other articles are all in one place.

What people say on the floor

Nurses talking to each other about this, quoted as they wrote it. This is opinion, not a source. It is here because it shows what the argument actually is — the rules above come from the decisions and the published guidance, not from these threads.

  • Edit: I guess they do care, because if you have three sick calls in a row, employee health has to clear you to come back first. ... Same. They don’t ask for details. Also - only employee illness and FMLA are excused, so never say your kid is the sick one.

  • I have a chronic condition as well but have intermittent FMLA with a certain amount of days per month I can take if needed so I’m not penalized. Can you look into that? ... What everyone else says

Guidance from professional bodies, insurers and other people who write about this. Useful, but it is advice, not law — that part is above.

How would you chart it?

This is the part we cannot research. If you have a way of writing this that has held up — put it here. No account, no name needed. Nothing that could identify a patient: no room numbers, no dates of birth, no MRNs. Use placeholders, the example still works.
